Paris, capital of Internet governance

Starting 20 June, 2008, Paris will host Internet World Week. A number of private and public meetings have been organized around the issues of Internet and its governance. Hosted by Icann, Isoc, AFNIC among others, they are open to all who wish to better understand the issues, participate in ongoing discussions or put forward new ideas. Agree - or not - with the organizations that will meet in Paris, agree - or disagree - with the participants who are users, providers, from civil society, public authorities, private sector or from the technical community, just come to listen or participate.

Egeni

The seventh meeting of Egeni, organized by ISOC France, partnering with Sociétés of information, is held in Paris on June 20, 2008, at the Meridien Montparnasse on the theme: "Internet 2020".

Three major debates punctuated this day of meetings:

  • Internet & Europe: toward a European IGF
Just before the presidency of European Union by France: debate on the role of Europe in the Internet governance between political leaders and keynote speakers.
  • Future of Internet and internet of the future
Experts and keynote speakers outline their different views and visions.
  • Users at the hearth of the Internet
Political leaders and organisations heads will discuss Internet governance dialogue with user representatives.

Icann

Icann takes over from 21 to 27 June; its 32nd international meeting held for the first time in France. The French hosts are numerous and are gathered within Agifem: Afnic, W3C, Renater, Namebay, Internet fr, Indom, EuroDNS, French connexion, Amen and Isoc France with the support of Mairie de Paris, Ministry of Economie, finances and employment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France Telecom and the "Toit de la Grande Arche” with the “Musée de l’informatique”. They will be joined by others, sponsors and partners.

The Icann conference takes place three times per year and comprises multiple meetings - generally open - that gather participants either around common topics or for their membership of a group or constituency.

For this meeting, the main topics that are likely to evolve in the coming weeks are:

  • The transition and evolution of Icann at the end of the JPA (Join Project Agreement) between Icann and DOC (US Department of Commerce),
  • New gTLDs - When, how, how much…?
  • IDNs (International Domain Names) for ccTLDs and gTLDs,
  • Internet Protocol addresses, towards the end of the distribution of IP version 4 and the taking off of IP version 6.

Of particular interest is a special meeting of EuRalo - the European Regional At-Large organization - will bring together national structures representing individual users as Isoc France and other European chapters of Isoc, Terre des femmes eV and possibly in a near future France At-Large. The structure is open to other organizations who wish to participate more directly and in the long term in the Icann discussions.
This will be the first meeting of EuRalo since its formation. It should be an opportunity for a broad exchange of view of Europeans on issues related to the technical management of domain names and IP addresses.

Isoc

Isoc will organize a number of meetings, including one for the representatives of the chapters present in Paris, and the Board of Directors of Isoc World.

June 2008 therefore represents a unique opportunity to raise awareness among many people of the importance of Isoc's slogan: Internet for all and Internet by each!
